5 SEO mistakes African SaaS founders keep making

African SaaS founders ship hard. The product gets built, the landing page goes live, the team starts hunting users. Almost always, the SEO conversation gets postponed until growth stalls, and by then it is months of unnecessary catch up. After auditing dozens of African SaaS sites, the same five mistakes show up over and over. Fix these and you start ranking for the terms you actually want, instead of bidding for them every month.

1. Targeting brand terms only

Half the sites we audit only rank for their own brand name. That is fine if everyone already knows you exist. If you are early stage, you need to rank for the problem you solve. Write the search term a user would type before they know your product exists, and build a page that answers it specifically.

2. One generic features page

A single features page that lists everything you do is a missed opportunity. Each major feature deserves its own URL with its own focused content. One page per feature, with one search intent per page. Google rewards specificity.

3. Ignoring Search Console

Search Console is free and gives you exactly the data you need. The most underused report is the query report, which shows you which searches already drive impressions to your site. Most early stage sites have several queries pulling in impressions but not clicks. Each one is a page waiting to be written.

4. No internal linking strategy

Every page on your site is a vote. If your blog post about pricing strategies does not link to your pricing page, you are not telling Google those two pages are related. Pick five to ten core pages, the ones you really want to rank, and make sure they are linked from every relevant post.

5. Treating SEO as a launch task

SEO is not a thing you do once at launch and forget. It is a discipline. One page per week, written with intent, internally linked, indexed via Search Console. Twelve months of that compounds into a moat your competitors cannot buy out.
